The Officials from KISIP 2 National Team, NYOTA project, and the KISIP CPCT Team held sensitization sessions today for members of the Chebiemit and Cheptongei Informal settlements, focusing on Social Economic Inclusion Component.
The program aims to train over 300 vulnerable unemployed youth who attained Form four(KCSE) and below, certify them through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
Implementing the program is NYOTA (National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement) is a government initiative, funded by the World Bank and implemented by several agencies, including the State Department of Youth Affairs and the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA).
The Skills acquired will help them to secure meaningful employment or become self-employed.
Funded by the World Bank, the initiative, led by Ms. Zenah Kurui, Head of Component 2(Social Economic Inclusion), is designed to improve the lives of vulnerable youth by creating job opportunities, boosting income generation, and promoting savings.
Today’s session is geared towards raising awareness about the collaboration between the two programs and outlining the criteria for recommending youth for training.
NYOTA program shall offer a five-month training program, followed by an assessment and certification through the Recognition of Prior Learning or trade test examinations to help participants secure employment.
The program will cover a wide range of fields, including masonry, electrical work, plumbing, salon services, mechanical work, communication, dress making and farming, among other courses.
It is open to youth aged 18 to 29, with a special extension to 35 years for persons with disabilities. Participants can pursue one course at a time on a full-time basis.
Mr. Douglas Momanyi, who led the NYOTA team, stated, “We will provide and equip trainees with requisite skills to enable them gain wage employment or enter into self employment.”
County project coordinator, Mr. Josphat Kerich urged the residents to turn up in larger numbers and make this program useful to them.
“let’s all make our applications in large numbers, there is no reason why anyone should be left behind” said Kerich.
Those with an accredited certificate from NITA will have the opportunity to train others and are encouraged to apply.
Trainees will receive a small stipend, and there will be regular monitoring to ensure progress.
The project aims at strengthening delivery systems for enhanced access to social and economic inclusion services and shock-responsive safety nets for poor and vulnerable households.
The Infrastructural projects in the two informal settlement are underway and it’s expected to be completed soon.
The meetings were attended by the KISIP 2 NPCT team, the County CPCT team, Director Ruto Meng’wa Director housing – Elgeyo Marakwet, Mr. Alex Oyuga Director youths and Social services, among other staffs
