COUNTY MAKES STRIDES IN FIGHT AGAINST HIV

Elgeyo Marakwet County is making meaningful progress in the fight against HIV, with an estimated 6,335 residents living with the virus out of the national a population of 1,326,336. The county’s overall HIV prevalence stands at 1.9%, slightly lower than the national average.

In the past year, the county recorded 123 new HIV infections and lost 202 people to AIDS-related illnesses. Among children aged up to 14, 33 new infections were recorded in 2024.
Speaking during the World AIDS Day celebration in Iten, CECm Health Services Mrs. Monicah Rotich reaffirmed the County Government’s commitment to ensuring access to comprehensive prevention, care, and treatment services.
“Through continued collaboration with partners and county health workers, we will ensure life-saving medication reaches all who need it,” she said.
The county has achieved impressive results, with 95% of people living with HIV knowing their status, 82% of those diagnosed on treatment, and 97% of those on treatment achieving viral suppression.

The 16 Days of Activism was also launched, with attendees including Chief Officer Caroline Magut, ACC Kamariny Ward Adrian Kilot, and ICRH Medical Superintendent Lawrence Kogos.
