The County Government today spread the wealth creation strategy campaign in Metkei and Kaptarakwa Wards in Keiyo South Sub County where over 1,850 farmers benefited from pyrethrum seeds distribution.
The move aims at improving households earnings from Cash crops within the County by building wealth through earnings, savings, investments, and protecting assets while managing debts.
Elgeyo Marakwet County is the only county in Kenya to have formulated the strategy whose intentions is to reduce the poverty index.
Mr. Edwin Komen, Chief Officer Agriculture urged farmers to venture into cash crops and start earnings enough to cover basic needs and save any surplus.
“Let us not only rely on traditional crops such as maize, we can earn more if we grow pyrethrum, avocados, coffee and many other cash crops,” said Komen.
Livestock Chief Officer, Dr. Robert Lagat said that getting wealthy for locals was possible if one sets clear financial goals by diversifying investments to mitigate risk and protecting existing wealth.
“If we set our goals right, definitely we shall grow our earnings from meagre to substantive resources that can help us settle our regular financial obligations,” reiterated Lagat.
The County Government of Elgeyo Marakwet is looking forward to put over 4,000 acres into pyrethrum farming before 2027.
Present during the campaign included Mr. Emanuel Birir- CO Lands who asked the residents to utilize their God given natural resources for posterity.Amon Melly-Regional Manager NorthRift who confirmed that there is ready market for pyrethrum.
Others were Philemon Toroitich and Susan Chebii -Ward Agricultural Officers, Richard Opudo-Sub County Agricultural officer, Janet Machenje- Industrial Crops Officer, Theophilus Ayabei Ward Administrator Metkei, Beatrice Magel Ward administrator Kaptarakwa.
