The Senate Standing Committee on Education has commended Elgeyo Marakwet County for prioritising the improvement of Early Childhood Development Education and vocational training.
Committee chair Senator Betty Montet said the team was impressed by the steps taken by the county government of Elgeyo Marakwet to improve earlier childhood education and vocational training.
While listening to responds from county governor Wisley Rotich on implementation of Early Childhood Development Education and Technical and Vocational Education in the county,
“I am impressed by the interventions you have had so far to ensure that our young learners are not just in school but in good classrooms,” said Senator Montet, “and by ensuring that there’s a vocational training institution in every Ward shows that the governor is a real proponent of technical knowledge.”
Committee Vice Chairperson Prof. Margaret Kamar said he was happy to see the strides in the county in matters development.
The Senator said she was also impressed to learn that ecde pupils study free in the county. She said: “The issue of all ecde teachers having a medical cover is quite impressive. In many areas, parents still pay for their children to learn.It is also encouraging to see pupils taking porridge in school.”
On his part, Governor Rotich said his administration was in the process of improving the terms of service of the ecde teachers.
“They had no medical insurance, and they didn’t have any valid contracts. At least they are now in our payroll. We have improved their terms from Sh14,000 to Sh26,000,” said the governor.
He added that the pupils were competing with the rest in the country owing to the introduction of digital learning.
“Our children are now competing with the rest of the children in the globe through digital learning,” he said, “we are making learning intetesting by using digital ways to dispense knowledge to our future generation.”
Already, 281 schools have been enrolled into the programme.
