A borehole in Chepkawai sub location in Cherangany Chebororwo ward, funded by International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) under Kenya Livestock Commercialization Project (KeLCoP) together with County Government of Elgeyo Marakwet, is already transforming daily lives for the residents.
The project covers 400 households in Kapseret, Kapkagaron, Kamanin villages and Duka Moja Centre, and it supports about 9,000 animals now drinking at the source while others at household level.
The borehole recharges at roughly 5,000 litres per hour, ensuring a steady supply, even in the dry season.
Elizabeth Cheptiony resident at kapseret village says the project has made clean water accessible for both people and livestock, cutting long trekking hours and improving health and productivity.
”Before this project, I used to trek some kilometers away to source for this commodity, but now this has really changed my daily routine as now I can do other chores because water is just at my door step.” she said.
A local water committee has been put in place to handle operations, fee collection and routine maintenance. The committee charges Ksh 2.50 for every 20 litres of water and Ksh 100 per household for livestock per month this is to enhance sustainability of the project.
The county government, under the stewardship of Governor Wisley Rotich, is intentional in ensuring residents access clean piped water. Currently, water access in Elgeyo‑Marakwet stands at 37%; this project is among those earmarked to help the county attain 52% by 2027.
The Kapseret borehole is part of KeLCoP’s broader effort to boost rural livelihoods across 10 counties, combining water infrastructure with livestock and agricultural development.
The committee has been working tirelessly to ensure the project runs smoothly. They are led by Martin Cheruiyot together with other stakeholders Clara Kisang and Patroba Kimaiyo, graduation champions working with smart households under the KeLCoP project under the guidance of ward project coordinator Mr. Benard Lelgo.
