Farmers in Tambach and Sambirir Wards have received 33 dairy goats today courtesy of the Kenya Livestock Commercialisation project (KeLCoP).
The breeds include Alphine and Toggenbuck which mature fast with attractive market returns.
While addressing beneficiary groups in Tambach on Monday, Elgeyo Marakwet Kelcop Program Coordinator Ms Dorothy Bomet said the distribution exercise was a continuous process and some more empowerment projects were in the offing.
“There are some more livestock that we have procured locally and there are some that were done by the national office,” said Bomet.
The initiative aims to increase small-scale farmer incomes and improve opportunities for the rural poor to enable them to increase their output, access markets, and increase their resilience.
The livestock sub-sector plays an important role in the Kenyan economy, helping to improve household food and nutrition security, increase incomes, create jobs, and contribute to sustainable livelihoods of many rural people living below the poverty line.
KELCOP program in Kenya targets 10 Counties among them Elgeyo Marakwet, Samburu, Marsabit and Baringo under Arid and Semi-arid lands ASAL. Highland counties benefiting from the initiative too include Kakamega, Siaya, Busia, Trans Nzoia, Nakuru and Bungoma.
The program is sponsored by the International Fund for Agricultural Development IFAD focusing on value chains that have the potential to provide productive employment and food security for women, youth, and marginalized people.
