Young talents selected

North rift region Under 20 athletics team was picked in Iten following Trials held at Lorna Kiplagat Sports Academy.

Sarah Jepchumba, Victory Topoki, Judy Jeruto, Mary Kibet, Diana Bungei from Elgeyo Marakwet county were among young talents that showcased their prowess in various races.

Other talents from Trans Nzoia, West Pokot, Turkana and Samburu were identified.

Elgeyo Marakwet county claimed the Steeple Chase, a race that is arguably ” a reserve” for the County over the past years.

Governor Alex Tolgos graced the event that was also attended by Athletics Kenya President Rt. Gen Jack Tuwei.

The Governor who is also the Team patron congratulated the team of winners who made to the regional list and challenged them to ensure they represented the region to the best of their abilities.

“We are privileged that this time round the World Under 20 will be held in Nairobi. Youths will have an opportunity to participate in an international race at home,” said Tolgos.

Tolgos said his government will facilitate the team heading to Nairobi, adding that the young talents will also be nurtured.

The national Trials will take place on 2nd July ahead of the World Under 20 championships that will start on 17th -23rd August 2021 at Moi Sports Centre Kasarani.

Gen Tuwei called on the team to brace themselves for a tough task ahead in the national trials.
