‎Elgeyo Marakwet County Government, in partnership with the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), has launched a campaign against drug abuse in Iten.

‎This initiative aims to combat the growing problem of substance abuse in the region, which is a significant concern nationwide, with approximately 4.7 million Kenyans aged 15-65 using at least one drug or substance of abuse.

‎The most commonly abused substance is alcohol, affecting over 3.2 million people, with men and young adults being the most vulnerable. Nearly half of drug users are adolescents aged 10-19, with initiation into drug use often beginning as early as 7 years old.

‎NACADA has been working closely with county governments to address this issue, and the launch of this campaign is a step towards creating awareness and reducing substance abuse in Elgeyo Marakwet.

‎The authority has also been advocating for stronger policies and community involvement to tackle the problem.

The campaign is set to continue across the county from today till Friday under the theme of empowering communities for brighter future.

The launch was officiated by County secretary Mr. Lazarus Chebii on behalf of Governor together with the Deputy County Commissioner Mr. Hebert kombo
