International day against drug abuse.

As the world marked the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on June 26, 2026, leaders, law enforcement, and community groups in Elgeyo Marakwet and across Kenya reflected on hard-won gains, while warning that new threats are complicating the fight.

‎Observed annually by the United Nations, the Day commemorates successes realised in the fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking. This year’s theme, “Persisting Issues, New Challenges,” captures the dual reality on the ground: progress made, but the problem evolving faster than before.

‎County Narcotics Director Mr. David Kandie said alcohol, bhang, and khat remain the most abused substances in Elgeyo Marakwet. Youth unemployment, peer pressure, and porous border points continue to fuel supply and demand.

‎School-based data also shows a rise in poly-drug use, with students mixing prescription medicines and alcohol. Stigma, Kandie added, still prevents many families from seeking help early.

‎Cheap, potent synthetic drugs often sold online or disguised as household items, making them harder to detect at border points. Social media and mobile money are now being used to coordinate small, rapid deliveries, making traditional interdiction more difficult.

‎Rising cases of anxiety and depression are also pushing more youth toward substance use as a coping mechanism, stretching rehabilitation capacity across the county.

‎In response, CECm Edwin Seronei urged residents to make use of available rehabilitation services early, before addiction deepens.

‎He said that, in Elgeyo Marakwet the county government is stepping in to bridge the treatment gap. The facility is SHA accredited, making care more accessible and affordable for families.

‎“We charge Ksh. 90,000 only for our full program, which is efficient and pocket-friendly unlike other rehab centres,” he said. “Since our inception in 2023, we have already churned out 132 clients who have successfully completed the program and reintegrated into their families and communities.”

‎County officials echoed the call, saying recovery and prevention must go hand in hand if Elgeyo Marakwet is to turn the tide against drug abuse under this year’s theme of “Persisting Issues, New Challenges.”
