On behalf of H.E. Governor Wisley Rotich, Deputy Governor Prof. Grace Cheserek led Elgeyo Marakwet County in commemorating the 62nd Jamhuri Day.
She honoured the 39 lives lost during the recent mudslides in Embobut and Endo Wards and thanked the national government, humanitarian agencies, and partners for their support.
A resettlement committee is already in place, and residents are urged to relocate from risky areas and adopt sustainable farming practices.
Prof. Cheserek highlighted major county milestones across key sectors:
Investment & Trade: Successful Elgeyo Marakwet International Business Summit with over 150 exhibitors.
Digital Governance: Full rollout of the national e-GP procurement system for transparency and efficiency.
Infrastructure: 374 km of new roads opened, 2,000 km graded, 430 km graveled, and 516 culverts installed, supported by rehabilitated county machinery.
Land & Markets: Progress in informal settlement titling under KISIP, community land inventory in partnership with FAO and construction of the Ksh 400M Iten Multi-Storey Market and other economic stimulus markets.
Health: Upgraded facilities with hemogram and X-ray machines, new CT scan and microbiology services at ICRH, and an expanded ambulance fleet.
Agriculture: More fertilizer distribution outlets leading to improved yields.
Sports Development: Successful 4th Iten International Marathon, ongoing Gavana Wa Raia Tournament, rollout of the ‘House of Coaches’ programme, and progress on Kamariny Stadium.
Education: Continued PEPEA Student Uplift Programme and steady progress toward establishing Kerio Valley University College.
Prof. Cheserek concluded by urging residents to safeguard young people against rising drug and substance and use of illicit alcohol.
