Following the effects of climate change that caused crop failure this year, Governor Wisley Rotich is calling on the people of Elgeyo Marakwet to embrace the household water pan strategy.
According to the County boss, his administration introduced the household water pan strategy to boost smallholder irrigation.
In the past two years, in partnership with the Eldoret-Iten Water Fund, Elgeyo Marakwet has helped communities install over 1,000 pans fitted with dam liners.
The families have grown their incomes exponentially due to reliable water year-round for smallholder irrigation and livestock, the Governor said.
“As we prepare for El Niño, we are also advising all our people to do a water pan in each home to harvest water that can be used during the dry season,” Governor Rotich said.
He advised locals interested to get in touch with county agricultural officers, ward administrators or any county staff near them for guidance.
