Election of Ward Climate Change Committees

Following the requirement of the Climate Change Act, the Department of Water, Environment and Climate Change put out a public notice inviting community members in all County wards for meetings to elect Ward Climate Change Committees. The department took residents through the Act, including the requirement that the composition of the Committees has to include women, Persons With Disabilities (PWDs), youth, representatives of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and Faith Based Organisations (FBOs). After the election, members picked officials to lead the committees.

Training of Ward Climate Change Planning Committee
The Department of Water, Environment and Climate Change through the support of World Vision through their Imara Project embarked on the training of the Ward climate Change Planning committee starting with committees in Kapyego, Sambirir, Embobut/Embolot, Endo and Emsoo wards where the Imara project is being implemented. Training for other wards is ongoing.

Participatory Climate Risk Assessment (PCRA) & County Climate Change Action Plan (CCAP) 2023-2027 Development.
Elgeyo Marakwet County Ward Climate Change Committee Members participated in Participatory Climate Risk Assessment (PCRA) development, aimed at developing Community Climate Change Risk Assessment report and Community Climate Change Response Action Plan.
The Committees were drawn from the 20 wards of Elgeyo Marakwet County and converged at their respective Sub County level for the activity.
This PCRA and CCAP builds into the County, Regional and National Climate Change Response Action Plans.

Validation of PCRA and CCAP 2023-2027

The Department of Water Environment and Climate Change hosted a multi-stakeholder workshop aimed at validating the Community-level Participatory Climate Risk Assessment reports received from the 20 wards in Elgeyo Marakwet County.
The stakeholders are drawn from different sectors in society which include; Government agencies, community organizations, NGOs, FBOs and local Community.
The exercise will lead to development of the County Climate Change Risk Assessment Report and County Climate Change Action Plan.

Cabinet Approval of PCRA and CCAP 2023-2027

The County Executive Committee Members (CECM), otherwise known as the County Cabinet, received and deliberated on the PCRA and CCAP and approved it for onward transmission to the County Assembly for consideration and adoption.
County Assembly adopts County Climate Change Action
The Elgeyo Marakwet County Assembly considered and approved Participatory Climate Response Assessment Report (PCRA) and consequently adopted County Climate Change Action Plan (CCCAP) 2023-2027, following approval by the County Cabinet.

This paved the way for the County Government of Elgeyo Marakwet to benefit from FLoCCA Grants.
