More than 1,000 bamboo trees have been planted in Kibonge, Kabiemit Ward in Keiyo South Sub County as the Country marked International Day of Biodiversity
During the exercise, Lands Cabinet Secretary Faridah Karoney revealed that government has a plan of planting 2 billion trees countrywide before the end of 2021.
The Cabinet Secretary appealed to wananchi to participate in the nationwide tree planting exercise.
“This is a collective responsibility between the government and wananchi to increase our forest covers” said Karoney. Elgeyo Marakwet County currently has a forest cover of 37%.
On his part Governor Alex Tolgos called for an inclusive engagement with the locals during tree planting exercises. The County Chief noted that the County still has a huge forest cover requiring interventions by the relevant authorities.
He added; “We all have an obligation of taking care of our forests for our benefits and generations to come”.
Principal Secretary for environment & forestry Dr.Chris Kiptoo said the government will continue conserving and protecting gazetted forests, sanctuaries, conservancies and water towers in the Country.
Others present leaders included Esther Koimett Principal Secretary, Broadcasting and Telecommunications, Cabinet Administrative Secretaries(CAS) Joseph Boinett, Linah Kilimo, MPs Daniel Rono (Keiyo South), Kangogo Bowen (Marakwet East) & William Kisang (Marakwet West), KVDA Managing Director Sammy Napolos & Chairman Jackson Kiptanui, Environment CEC Abraham Barsosio, MCAs among other officials.
