His Excellency Dr. Gabriel Lagat is very passionate about poverty eradication in Kenya by progressively influencing behavioral decisions in households in the country. He believes that poverty in many households in the country is attributable to choices Kenyans make at household level and not external variables.

It is no wonder then that Dr. Lagat did his Ph.D. in Agricultural Resource Economics at Moi University, his thesis being on ‘The Effect of household investment on poverty in North Rift region of Kenya’.

He is also holder of a Masters in Economics from the University of Nairobi and his thesis topic was on The effects of foreign aid fungibility on government expenditure and taxation’ as well as a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics.

Dr. Lagat also has a post graduate Diploma on Project Management from MDF Ede Netherlands. He sat his KACE A levels at Tambach High School and O levels at Kitany.

He has worked at Moi University where he served as Senior Lecturer in the School of Human Resources Development. He has also served as Consultant Training Manager at the Kenya Institute of Management, deputy General Secretary YMCA Kenya, Coordinator and programme officer ASAL Programmes at the Coast and further worked at the Ministry of Planning as an Economist.

He has published several books and research projects.

H.E. Dr. Lagat was elected the Deputy Governor of Elgeyo Marakwet County on March 4th, 2013.
